Front Flap:
She was a perfect baby and she had a perfect name.  Chrysanthemum.  When she was old enough to appreciate it, Chrysanthemum loved her name.  And then she started to school.  "I'm named after my grandmother," said Victoria.  "You're named after a flower."  Chrysanthemum wilted.  Life at school didn't improve.  in fact, it got worse.  Then the students were introduced to their music teacher, Mrs. Twinkle.  Mrs. Delphinium Twinkle.  And suddenly... Chysanthemum blossomed.

Hooray! School!

It's the first day of school, and Chrysanthemum is sure that it's going to be absolutely perfect.  Just like her name.  Chrysanthemum.  But her classmates have other ideas.  "If I had a name like yours, I'd change it," says Victoria.  But when a teacher with an equally precious and priceless and fascinating name comes to her defense, Chrysanthemum's school days go from absolutely dreadful to absolutely delightful.

Kevin Henkes's Chrysanthemum, with its charming characters, subtle wit, and colorful illustrations, is a perfect book about school for students, teachers, and parents.

* "Henkes's language and humor are impeccably fresh, his cozy illustrations sensitive and funny, his little asides to adults an unobtrusive delight."
- Kirkus Reviews (STARRED REVIEW)

* "Chrysanthemum exemplifies Henkes's talent for creating true picture stories for young audiences." - The Horn Book (STARRED REVIEW)

"Chrysanthemum is a book we have used in every professional role we have undertaken... to demonstrate the we need to be... sensitive to the diverse populations in our schools and how important it is to acknowledge the individual identities that make up our communities."
- Carmen Farina and Laura Kotch, A School Leader's Guide to Excellence

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
